Metro work with Broomberg & Chanarin - 'To Photograph The Details of a Dark Horse in Low Light’

13 September 2012
Metro were delighted to once again work with award winning photographers Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin on images for their new exhibition ‘To Photograph The Details of a Dark Horse in Low Light’. The exhibition has been titled in homage to the code phrase used by Kodak to describe the capabilities of a new film stock developed in the early 80’s, which tackled the inabilities of their earlier films to accurately render dark skin.

The Kodak film was famously declared inherently ‘racist’ by Jean Luc Godard in 1977, when he refused to use it on a filming assignment to Mozambique. Broomberg and Chanarin returned several times to Mozambique to photograph a series of rare Bwiti initiation rituals, using only Kodak film stock that had expired in the late 1950’s in response to a commission to ‘document’ Gabon, a sovereign state on the west coast of Central Africa.

Using out-dated chemical processes Broomberg and Chanarin managed to salvage only one single frame from the many colour rolls they exposed during their trips and that one image is presented along with an selection of black and white test strips which Metro scanned and printed producing a total of eight C Type and fibre based prints.
