Mr Punch will be 350 years old this year, with the first recorded sighting in England of a Mr Punch puppet made in 1662 in the diary of Samuel Pepys. As part of The Big Grin, a nationwide celebration of this anniversary, The V&A Museum of Childhood will be showcasing a small display and an exhibition: That's the way to do it!
Metro has worked with renowned photographer Tom Hunter many times in his established career and is proud to have processed and scanned his ten 5 x 4 film images for this exhibition, all of which were printed A1 size on C-Type super gloss paper.
‘Punch Professors in England’ is an exhibition of Tom’s works featuring contemporary Punch practitioners from around the country, known since Victorian times as ‘Professors', who for generations have brought the story of Punch and Judy to life with their wit and personality. Specially commissioned for Mr Punch’s birthday celebrations, the portraits show each Professor alongside their booth, expressing the highly individual approaches each of them have to their performance within essentially English settings.
