This month’s Life Framer competition winner has recently been announced as Sophie Gamand for her image of a xoloitzcuintle or hairless dog. Acclaimed US photographer Robin Schwartz
judged the entries for the Animal Kingdom theme and commented on the winning image “The Xoloitzcuintle dog in the desert landscape is like nothing I have seen. How unusual, the hairless dog with wonderful skin, her eye illuminated from the light from above. The background makes or breaks the image, and importantly provides added information for a story. This photograph delivers an encompassing scenario, a full package, and I would love to hear from the photographer and the backstory. This image gives me the magic realism of, is Don Juan from Carlos Castaneda stories.”
Commenting further about the entries in general she continued, “The images were so different from one another and equally wonderful in their own genres. I ultimately decided to select what surprised me, along with what stayed with me. I do wish I could have had a tie for the first prize, and a few more honourable mentions.”
The runner-up prize was awarded to Ottavia Poli and third prize to Tom Brook. The wining images will all go forward to be judged for the overall prize and will form part of the exhibition which will take place in London, Paris and Los Angeles.
Entries to this month’s theme ‘An Instant’ close on 30th April, inviting entrants to peer into the present moment, forgetting the past, putting the future on hold, and focussing on the now, an instant and glance at a detail, an expression, an action, a feeling.
