As part of our Punk London series of exhibitions Metro is excited to be hosting Owen Harvey’s first solo UK exhibition, ‘Skins and Suedes’ in our FOH Gallery later this month.
Young award-winning photographer Owen Harvey has collated the images for his exhibition from a four-year project, highlighting the current Skinhead and Suedehead subculture across the UK. Spending time with individuals and groups sometimes over a period of a few days Harvey’s portraits present an intimacy and personal depth, which softens the sometime harsh image these individuals receive.
With a background heavily ensconced in the music scene, the style and attitudes of various musicians have heavily influenced his work, feeling drawn to subcultures of groups also inspired by those similar things. He explains; “I get inspired by people who have an energy about them and an excitement for what they do, these attributes are easy to find in subcultures and often groups of young people.
“I feel it's important to document these subcultures now; modern culture is changing quickly and more young people live their lives through technology. There's no specific message as such, but the images are a celebration and I'd hope that's evident.”
The exhibition features large format C type prints
with Harvey preferring the square shape for his portraits, shot on medium format film which Metro have processed
