Reference Works is a major photography exhibition featuring the work of four commissioned artists Michael Collins
, Brian Griffin
, Andrew Lacon
(winner of the RCA Metro Prize 2011) and Stuart Whipps
The artists were each given an open brief to make creative responses to the new Library of Birmingham, the ‘old’ Central Library building and the build, transition and relocation from one building to the other.
Griffin’s work portrays the people of the Library of Birmingham project; Collins’s approach seeks to faithfully record the construction of a 21st century library; Lacon’s sculptural forms question the nature of photography and what it is to ‘document’, exploring the relationship between photography and sculpture; while Whipps poignantly captures John Madin’s 1974 Central Library ahead of its demolition.
Metro worked closely with the artists on the production of photographic works for the exhibition including drum scans
, premier C type prints
as well as framing and mounting
many of the works bringing together the commissioned work with the work of four emerging artists (Mihaela Calin, André de Jong, Anne Pawlak and Nathan Spencer) who were chosen as part of the mentoring programme to produce new work for the exhibition which is exhibited at Space 35, Birmingham City University until 1st November 2013.
