Black and White Silver Gelatin Photographic Prints

View papers

We have brought together some of the UK’s most creative black and white photographic printing talents to create our black and white photo printing department. Offering a complete range of services: from traditional hand printing, to our innovative black and white silver gelatin photo prints, Lambda photo prints on resin coated or fibre based material to large format sizes.

Our team of master printers and digital print operators and technicians have years of experience working with some of the top names in the industry. Working with our scanning, processing and finishing departments, we are uniquely equipped to fulfil the most complex of creative print briefs.

Black and white hand photographic prints

A master printer will produce the finest traditional print from your photographic negative. Handprints are made in an enlarger, which holds your negative for light to be projected through onto your choice of light-sensitive photographic paper. Black and white photo papers are commonly known as silver gelatin or bromide darkroom papers.

The printer will make several tests initially before making your final print. They may use techniques like cropping, burning and dodging to frame your image correctly and get detail into the highlights and shadows. Once the photographic paper has been exposed, prints are hand processed in photographic chemicals, then washed and toned to archival standards.

Professional Photographic Printing Services

Black and white Lambda photographic prints

Metro worked in close collaboration with Harman Technology to achieve a solution to the problem of printing vintage archives digitally, rather than by hand. By adapting a paper processor for the Lambda, Steve Macleod, Creative Director at Metro Imaging invented a new type of digital black and white photo print. This innovation has meant we have lead the way in producing real fibre based and resin coated photo prints from digital files: something inconceivable ten years ago.

This service is available as premier and online prints only.

"Due to the nature of silver gelatin Fibre Based media including Harman Digital FB and conventional darkroom papers having inherent expansion and contraction qualities, we recommend not ordering any pre-cut mount borders or frames as the dimensions of this product vary slightly on completion of production."

-Professor Steve Macleod | Director -  Metro Imaging Ltd

Premier service

The Premier print service is aimed at clients who need more input than a simple on-screen check. This service begins with a meeting to establish the parameters of the brief. You are introduced to a production manager and printer, both of whom will stay with you for the duration of the job and indeed for the duration of your time working with Metro. The dialogue between yourself and the printer extends beyond the initial brief and emails and calls are passed back and forth over the duration of production.

Online photo printing

If you are happy to fully prepare your own file ready for printing and do not need the help of one of our technicians then Metroprint online photo printing, our fully automated self service printing facility, could be for you. With Metroprint we offer C Type, or black and white, Lambda prints alongside Giclee prints and mounting services, all at online prices.
