Giulietta Verdon-Roe Exhibition
July 2010

as you are

Rich Mix 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA
14 July until 15 August 2010

Metro have been working with award-winning photographer Giulietta Verdon-Roe recently to produce her wonderful black and white fibre-based prints for her upcoming exhibition “as you are”, at Rich Mix, East London’s new cultural arts centre.

Giulietta began her work on this project in 2008 and it is now on-going, documenting the people and the land of North Ronaldsay, the northernmost island of Orkney, Scotland. When she began there were just four children attending the community school on the island and the population stood at 63 inhabitants. Now the population stands at just 50 and sadly the school stands empty. Two council funded houses have now been built to encourage new residents and families to the island in a bid to reverse the current risk of it becoming “a dying island”.

Giulietta’s images document the changing life of the island as well as allowing us an insight into the lifestyle of the residents, which in many ways remains unaltered in generations. Portraying the unusual seaweed eating sheep, the tallest land-based lighthouse on the British Isles and of course the remoteness of the island itself, Giulietta allows us a glimpse into life in this remarkable place.
