Metro is delighted to continue our support of Karina Al Piaro, a predominantly Nile based photographer and her work which continues to pioneer the production of location-specific, large scale immersive works.
Al Piaro has been invited to make a keynote lecture at the prestigious American University Cairo (AUC) as part of the
the In Translation lecture series, which has been commissioned by American University Cairo and will be co sponsored by Photopia Cairo. She will be presenting her lecture “House of Light: A Century of Visual Translation - The Camera, Process and the Nile” and will be the first female photographer in the territory to have been offered such an honour. The Lectures have been put together by Photopia, a unique contemporary photography hub based in Cairo created by Marwa Abou Leila who has been inspired to bring emerging and established photographers in the territory together.
Al Piaro’s lecture will be in celebration and support of a rebirth of contemporary camera photography on the Nile. Raising issues of restoration, preservation and the continued nurturing of the photographic heritage of the Nile alongside her personal narrative and experiences.
Metro and Al Piaro came together again in 2012 when we began the development and continued pioneering of large immersive black and white silver gelatin photographic prints
site specific to the Nile in Egypt. The works are part of a continuous body of work entitled Al Arwah (The Spirits)
which was presented at an inaugural exhibition in Cairo in late 2015.
