New Metro Mentorship with Calvert 22 Foundation for New East Photo Prize 2016

18 November 2016

Metro is delighted to be partnering Calvert 22, offering a new Metro Mentorship Award to a chosen finalist in the inaugural New East Photo Prize.  Continuing our support of young and upcoming artist this mentorship will be tailor-made to suit the needs of the individual winner and will be fully supported over a 12 month period plus also receive £1000 credit for Metro Imaging services. .

The New East Photo Prize received 1030 entries from 25 New East countries (Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia and Central Asia) and recognises practitioners offering representations of the social, cultural and physical landscape of the New East.  The exhibition features over 100 C type matt prints produced by Metro.

Although hugely diverse, the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are often conjoined and represented in an outdated manner which undermines the rich culture and variety of creative output from these nations. The Prize seeks to broaden perceptions of the New East through the medium of photography

The winner of the Prize will be announced at a reception on Thursday 1st December and the awarded body of work will be published as a photo book produced by Calvert 22 Foundation.  Additionally a Special Prize, dedicated to unfinished documentary projects, will be awarded by New East Photo Prize partner Bird In Flight, an online magazine about photography and visual culture.

In addition the Calvert 22 Foundation are hosting a New East Photo Weekend bringing together leading photographers, artists and curators to share their experience and ideas with emerging practitioners.  A series of interactive events including talks, workshops and one-to-one advice sessions will take place aimed at photographers of all ages.

Metro’s Director Steve Macleod is hosting a workshop entitled “How to prepare for a Portfolio Review” which is aimed at emerging photographers keen to develop their practice critically or trying to secure exhibitions. Steve will give key tips on how to prepare your portfolio before you have it reviewed.
